Don Abbondio
DON ABBONDIO
Don Abbondio is the most popular character in the famous Italian novel of “The Betrothed”, where the author, Alessandro Manzoni showed all of his comic and characterisation skills
He is well supported by his servant Perpetua, whose role was so well described that this name is now used for all of the women who exercise this profession.
In common with many priests of that period (and not only !) Don Abbondio chosed his ministry mainly for the social position that this offered him and because he considered it to be the safest and most protected from all those abuses and the injustices that characterized that historical period, but without really feeling deeply committed to his mission.
His personality, his character and his attitudes are dominated by fear which, together wlth his attachment to that life, make him petty and selfish.
Faced with any unpleasant incident he adopts a policy of concealment and he shows himself out of tune, astonished and dreamy as demonstrated by these words describing his encounter
with the Bravi : …. “… ..He, always keeping his prayer book open as if he was reading it, glancing upwards in order to spy on their movements and, seeing them coming towards him, he was suddenly attacked by a thousand thoughts …. he immediately asked himself if there was any way out, to the right or to the left, but there was not.
He made a quick examination, if he had sinned against some powerful or revengeful ….… Don Abbondio is afraid of everyone and everything; he is limited, subdued by fear and suspicion, he lives as a slave of the minutiae of life …. … the way he lived consisted principally of avoiding ,wherever possible, all conflict and surrendering to those who could not be avoided …. … .. He is incapable of doing evil on his own initiative. Manzoni defined him as “no claws and no fangs,” however, through his cowardice, he becomes an accomplice and instrument of violent people, he is a man without culture … ” Carneades, who was he? .. “… he is miserly and mistrustful.
A bit like all petty poeple, he does not blame the oppressors and bullies but rather those who try to stand against them, and he always sides with the strongest. Ultimately, although at first glance he may seem a simple and cartoonish character, he is instead deeply complex, as Manzoni wanted to portray him as …….” a clay pot, forced to travel with many iron pots”….
