David and Goliath in the vision of three great artists
The story of David and Goliath was portrayed by many painters and sculptors, especially fascinated by the figure of the daring boy who armed only with a slingshot tackles the formidable giant.
“Young, blond and good-looking”, is the Bible description.
And like a defiant teenager of extraordinary grace and loveliness, the Florentine sculptor Donatello depicted him in a famous bronze statue.
Built around 1430, the statue became a sensation because for the first time after the age Greek-Roman was presented a human figure completely naked.
Even in what is perhaps the most famous statue of the history of art, the monumental David sculpted by Michelangelo Buonarroti
at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the figure of the child becomes an exaltation of beauty and virile strength. David is portrayed here in the moment of vibrant pending before the clash.
Caravaggio instead, in one of his last, shocking interpretations of the biblical event , painted in 1606, putting emphasis on the severed head
and his face distorted by pain of Goliath, which the painter lends his features (it is almost certain that is a self-portrait). The suffering of the defeated is reflected also on the tormented face of David, very different in these representations by the adolescent defiant and triumphant immortalized by Donatello and Michelangelo.
